膠嶺石是由顆粒極細的含水鋁硅酸鹽構成的層狀礦物，也稱蒙脫石、微晶高嶺石。它是由火山凝結巖等火成巖在堿性環境中蝕變而成的膨潤土的主要組成部分。

蒙脫石主要由基性火成巖在堿性環境中風化而成，也有的是海底沉積的火山灰分解后的產物。蒙脫石為膨潤土的主要成分。膨潤土在我國產地很多，如遼寧、黑龍江、吉林、河北、河南、浙江等地都有產出。我國具工業價值的蒙脫石礦床多產于中生代火山巖系中。

一般說蒙脫石外觀形態多是說膨潤土原礦，膨潤土原礦常呈土狀隱晶質塊狀，電鏡下為細小鱗片狀，一般說蒙脫石的微觀形態多是說蒙脫石的晶體結構。
